Burps have recently paid for a Sound Ear for the neonatal unit to show how much noise is generated in each area with an audit trail to show noise levels at different times of the day and night. This will help make staff and parents more aware of how much noise they are actually making as loud noises affect premature babies whose auditory systems are still developing. This was the one of the results of a quality improvement project looking at ideas to reduce noise levels for the babies that was carried out by a nurse on the unit.
